The Van Gundy brothers of the basketball world are two men basketball fans owe a huge debt of gratitude. Between Stan’s incredulousness on the sideline when a call goes the other way, or Jeff’s hysterical commentary, these two guys bring a lot to the subtleties of what makes the NBA worth watching. I once heard somebody say that JVG is pound for pound the best commentator in sports. One could also make the argument that his brother SVG is pound for pound the most mediocre coach in the NBA.
I first became a JVG fan when he coached the Knicks in the 1990′s. He helped lead the Knicks to the 1994 finals as an assistant to Pat Riley and once more in 1999 as head coach. Stan Van Gundy looks like adult film star, Ron Jeremy. Vote below for your favorite Van Gundy.

This vote was a really tough call: while on the one hand I love Stan Van Gundy, because I would argue that he is probably the all-time best timeout-caller in NBA coaching history (you gotta think about the intangibles). However, growing up as a die-hard Knicks fan throughout the 1990s (Allan Houston was my favorite basketball player at one point), I gotta give this one to JVG. Jeff Van Gundy, during his tenure as the Knicks head coach, looked as though he was enduring the most devastating mid-life crisis in human history, and it lasted for about 4 years. It is arguable that the Knicks could have achieved championship greatness had big Pat Riley been at the helm, but it wouldn’t have been as satisfying of a ride without the laughable mediocrity of Jeff Van Gundy. And I would agree that he is the most superior commentator to ever grace the screens of television basketball. During game 4 of the Celtics/Magic series, he posed one of the greatest questions never asked: “Why are you dribbling?”
Tough call as Jeff was a sucessful high school coach from my hometown of Rochester, NY while Stan coached at my college, Castleton. Jeff dealt with John Starks which gives him the edge.
I prefer Jeff and I don’t consider it all that night. Anyone who just grabs onto the ankle of an angry Alonzo Mourning during a brawl is cool in my book.
